Naming Ceremony

So, what is a baby naming ceremony?

A naming ceremony is a wonderful way of welcoming your child into your family and formally introducing them to your friends. It is also a great occasion for a party! It is usually performed for babies but can be adapted for older children. Some step-parents like to use the occasion to make promises to a step-child. It is also a touching service to welcome a child who is being adopted into the family.
A naming ceremony doesn’t replace a christening or baptism. You can still choose to make those vows to God in church. Then, at the reception, or another time, possibly your child’s first birthday, you can have a ceremony to make a parent’s promise to your child, to raise them in a loving, nurturing, family home. If you would like to include a prayer or blessing I would be happy to do that for you.
It is an informal style of ceremony, where you make a promise of love and support to your child’s future. You can invite special friends or family members to be godparents and to pledge their support as your child grows. It is a great opportunity for grandparents to also make vows to you and your child. Some couples also like their other children to be involved in making promises to be a loving brother or sister.
The ceremonies can be held anywhere. Many hold them at home or in village halls and with babies they are often combined with the first birthday party.

What happens in it?

The ceremony itself is very family orientated and I like to make mine as child-friendly as I can. I often involve the older brothers or sisters in the service, as this makes it very special for them too and helps to bond the family together. Some families like to use the occasion to light a unity candle to symbolise the family are as one. One of my favourite actions is to encourage the extended family and friends to make a circle round the child and parents, brothers and sisters to symbolise that they are encircling them with love and never-ending support.
The ceremony usually lasts about 20 minutes and can include a signing of a certificate as a permanent memento of the day. Music or readings can also be incorporated. One of my favourites is from Sam McBratney’s “Guess How Much I Love You”. If I am doing a ceremony for a young child then I like to encourage everyone to sing the baby’s favourite nursery rhyme.

Your role

A naming ceremony is essentially about your promise to your child. It is not religious, though it could have a prayer or blessing in it and the child could have godparents. The focus of the service is on your family and your love for each other. During the ceremony you will state your commitment to your child and make a promise to support and encourage them as they grow. Some parents write their own declarations, or I can suggest some wording.
You don’t have to be married, though some couples choose to incorporate a naming ceremony in their wedding celebration. If you are a single parent, a naming ceremony is the perfect time to recognise the support that family and close friends will play in your child’s upbringing.
I will go through the style of service when I meet with you and can make suggestions as to how to make the celebration personal. You might want to look at the sample ceremony for some ideas. Together we will create a truly memorable experience to welcome your child into your family. A ceremony with memories you will always treasure.

Ready to start planning your ceremony?

Simply fill in the form on the Contact Me page or call Fiona on 0793 037 2036 and we will make arrangements to meet up and discuss what you have in mind. It is a good idea to meet in the venue where your ceremony is to take place so that we can get a ‘feel’ for how it will work on the day. I prefer to meet in person but if you live some miles away we can video chat over Skype.

When we meet, we will throw around ideas for your perfect ceremony, discuss logistics, how many guests you have coming and chat a bit about your story. I will gather some interesting details about you and your child to make your ceremony script personal.

Once you have signed the booking form and paid the deposit, I will draft an order of service so that we all know how the ceremony will run. Two weeks before your event I will email a draft of your ceremony script for approval.

I will be at your venue about an hour before your ceremony starts to settle any nerves you may have and to answer any last minute questions. If you wanted it, there is an option for us to meet up the day before the event to run through things.

Following your ceremony you will receive a presentation copy of your script to keep as a memento of your day.
